Hospice Myths

 

Myth: Hospice is only for the last few days of life.
Reality: Some patients actually improve on Hospice and may remain on services for many months.

Myth: Hospice is only for pain control.
Reality: Hospice provides many other services beyond pain control.

Myth: Hospice is only for cancer patients.
Reality: Hospice is appropriate for cancer patients AND any diagnosis or illness for which aggressive treatment no longer provides relief or hope of a cure. Diagnosis may include but are by no means limited to: congestive heart failure (CHF), cirrhosis of the liver, end stage renal disease, Parkinsonís disease, coronary artery disease, HIV, and many others...

Myth: Hospice patients must be home bound.
Reality: The goal of Hospice is to allow patients to be as active and involved as their energy level allows.

Myth: You canít keep your own doctor if you enter hospice.
Reality: Hospice physicians work closely with your doctor of choice to determine a plan of care.
